Is it possible to show search results based on the user group or access level the current logged in user belongs to?
For instance, if the currently logged-in user belongs to User Group A, then only the search results matching that user group would be shown.
This way I would not have to generate multiple search types, one per user group.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but if your content type has usergroup as one of the fields then it is possible to do a search on it, what you need is user->groups live value on the field in the search type.
